In 1948 he received a letter from a Swedish actress who had seen his movies and wanted to make a film with him. Her name was Ingrid Bergman and this letter to Rossellini was the start of their love affair. The couple had become close friends with Enzo Ferrari and when Roberto wanted a present for Ingrid to celebrate their wedding anniversary, the choice was obvious: a custom made Ferrari 212 Inter Coupe. Ingrid was delighted with her present and called it her “Growling Baby”. This Ferrari with its illustrious history will be offered for sale by RM at their Ferrari only Auction in Maranello on May 18. Dating from the final year of manufacture, presented here is an 8hp drophead coupé. Clearly the subject of much work in the past, the car is finished in ivory with red leatherette interior trim and has, we are told, a serviceable hood. It has been stored for the past three years or so and will require general servicing and recommissioning prior to taking to the road. We are advised that the engine was rebuilt during 1999 and various bills are supplied along with a V5 document and an expired MOT certificate.
