Many years ago your editor saw this car in a dark lockup where it was kept by someone who had fled his country in 1968. The make of the car is well-known, indeed you might say that it has been around forever, at least since the start of automobile manufacturing. Trucks and road tractors were made from 1919 and a few years later a merger was made with another company bringing passenger cars into the range. In the 1930s these became very popular. Our quiz car wasn’t popular, but well loved. It was available in several body styles. Do you know what we are talking about? Then tell us the make, model, (approximate) year and everything else you can tell us about this model (please note that we have artfully removed the emblem). Before you start writing away, do check Read More for the rules! And please use our Contact Form before Monday, March 15. Enjoy your weekend!

Judging by the number of motion pictures made, India has a film industry that is larger than that of Hollywood. Nowadays known as Bollywood, its roots go back to 1913 when the first silent movie was made in Bombay. Even in the 1930s some 200 motion pictures were made annually. Harit Trivedi sends us this photo from a set of movie stills with Indian film stars. The lady in the centre is probably one such star from long before the term Bollywood was coined. Does anyone recognize her?
To the point… the car on the right is a 1947 Indian assembled DeSoto, see the accessories like the spot light at the base of the windshield and the judgment stick on the fender (click main pic). But the car on the left is intriguing. There is a peculiar pressing above the wheel. The hubcap has a script on it, but even when blowing up the photo, it can hardly be read. Austin? Alvis? What can it be? Mail us!
Update byRobin Gilbert: "It's an Alvis TA 14 Carbodies drophead coupé. The TA 14 has distinctive nave plates (hub caps to some!) with the triangular Alvis logotype stamped in the centre. It's a Carbodies because of the lack of external landau irons (present on the Tickford version) and the trim strips (one is visible) on the panel between the spare wheel housing and the rear of the hood."

The first thing you’ll notice about this 1912 Gobron-Brillié is its wooden skiff or boat tail body. And did you notice the twin rear wheels? But these aren’t the only unusual features of this car. It also has an amazing engine built around a concept that is hard to imagine. The Brillié in the name Gobron-Brillié was Eugene Brillié, who had developed an novel engine using opposed pistons. If you’re interested, see ‘Read More’ for a more detailed explanation. The skiff body was made by the Parisian firm of J. Rothschild & Fils incorporating the ideas of Jean-Henri Labourdette, who was the first to develop one. Many skiff bodies are thought to have been made of tulipwood, but Labourdette himself wrote that he only used mahogany. Whether tulip, mahogany or any other timber, this wonderful ‘woodie’ will be auctioned by RM at their Automobiles of Amelia Island sale on March 13th. (photos courtesy RM)

Leslie Driest doesn't agree with our recent "how to impress the girls" photo and sends us some photos that according to her correctly illustrate how you should impress the girls: ”By driving a 1929 Duesenberg Model J chassis in the middle of winter while sitting on a modified office chair atop a wooden pallet!” Sure, Leslie, looks like a real bird catcher to us ;-) We suspect it will take some time before we can see the completed Duesy at a Concours d’Elegance like the one at Meadow Brook? (we mention this concours in particular, as we had a chat with new director James McCarter who is assigned to give a big boost to the event. Stay tuned! (photos courtesy Classic and Exotic Services)
